Sooner or later it had to happen -
someone complaining about spam used spam to get his message across. In this
case, the ISP did not stand for it and shut down the spammer. Bravo!
Boycott Watch has received a group of unsolicited
emails from the group calling itself SPAMIS, or the Strategic Partnership
Against Microsoft Illegal Spam, calling for a boycott of all Microsoft products
claiming that Microsoft is spamming and should therefore be boycotted. While
investigating the email, we discovered that the registrar and web hosting
company, Tucows.net / DomainDirect.com had shut down the spammer for violation
of its anti-spam web hosting policy. This spammer purchased several names,
including SPAMIS.com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .us, are of which are
registered to Robert Soloway, PO Box 1259, Seattle, WA 98111.
The registrar and hosting company has a clear policy
against its customers spamming, as posted at:
http://www.domaindirect.com/terms.html Spam Policy. We reserve the right to
revoke without refund any domain name services, which, in our judgment, has
been used for any unlawful purpose, including theft of email service, or as a
source of unsolicited bulk email or as an address to use for replying to
unsolicited bulk email. This also applies to advertising (spamvertizing) your
domain name web site URL in an unsolicited email. This policy also applies to
Usenet Spam (off-topic, bulk posting/cross-posting, advertising in
non-commercial newsgroups, etc.). This will not apply to email return addresses
used without the owner's knowledge or consent.
Microsoft does use bulk mail, but it also complies
with US anti-spam email laws by only emailing to people who have opted into its
lists and allowing people to opt-out of their email lists, so the claim against
Microsoft is baseless. Regardless of this fact, SPAMIS was shut down by its web
hosting company for spamming, and Boycott Watch feels this action was
justified. Had SPAMIS really wanted to get its message across, Mr. Soloway
would have sent legitimate emails or contacted organizations such as Boycott
Watch, for example, via our web form on our contact page and not via spam.
