Emergency Aid to Haiti - A Consumer's View

Talking Point#6: Israel Leads in Haiti Medical Relief:

Israel has the single largest medical facility in Haiti, and many volunteers are joining the Israel Defense Forces effort because it is so successful. You can follow the activity of the IDF hospital on twitter while the United States hospital ship Comfort is still on its way.

Israeli reports include: "90 surgeries have been performed at the #IDF field hospital in #Haiti, 5 babies were delivered, 2 premature" and "300 patients admitted to the #IDF field hospital in the last 24 hours. The hospital in #Haiti is at full capacity" All this while the US is still conducting drills.

Talking Point#5: Debbie Schlussel reports Islamic Relief and Scientologists in Haiti Working under False Pretense

Columnist and television personality Debbie Schlussel issued a report today (1/19/2010) today stating Islamic Relief and Scientologists in Haiti are engaging in conversion activity as opposed to actual relief in Haiti.

Talking Point #4

According Charity Navigator.org, there is not enough information for them to issue a report while at the same time there are questions about the efficiency of his charity and what organizations the money actually goes to in Haiti.

Talking Point #3

Saturday, January 16, 2009, MSNBC President Obama tells Haiti that "sustained help is on the way."

The question is what President Obama means by sustained? There is no question the United States needs to take the lead in humanitarian air in Haiti. There are several reason for that and Boycott Watch will leave that for the political pundits, but from a consumer standpoint, the question is how much aid will President Obama commit because it is our money - the money of every taxpayer in this great nation.

That is not an argument against aid, whatsoever. The U.S. Military is uniquely qualified to keep order in Haiti in the short term. While it is neither the primary or even secondary mission of the U.S. military, our military personnel are respected around the world, even in Iraq and Afghanistan where there are those who hate America in general.

The question at hand is to what level U.S. aid should go to Haiti. Do we: A) provide humanitarian aid, B) Also rebuild to pre-earthquake conditions, or C) rebuild to new earthquake prevention standards? Whatever the choice, politicians need to know whose money they are spending. Regardless of your political opinion, please consider calling your local Congressional representatives and let them know what you think should be done. President Obama is clearly planning something, so now is the time for you to be heard.

Talking point #2: Should banks take their regular credit card transaction fee?

Kudos to radio talk show host extraordinaire Angie Coiro for championing a cause brought to light by MSNBC host Dylan Ratigan on one of his busted segments in which he points out banks may make millions of dollars off of your emergency relief donations via credit cards and the associated fees. While Boycott Watch points out that banks have no obligation to change their system for any one charity, which can alone cost the banks millions of dollars and months of computer programming and testing, Boycott Watch also points out that nobody should demand which specific charities any company chooses to support or not to support.

Regardless, thanks to media pressure, banks are now making commitments not to accept any fees they are entitled to receive, and to send the full donation amounts directly to the intended Haiti relief charities. The banks involved deserve respect and admiration for their support of this vital charity. At the same time, Boycott Watch stresses the fact that no one person should dictate which charities another person or company donates to. There are plenty of great charities people can donate to and nobody can donate to every charity.

Talking Point #1: What charity should the White House Promote?

When President Obama initially spoke to the nation about charity for the rescue efforts in Haiti, he told Americans to go to the White House website for a list of charities to donate to. While there are many great charities, the U.S. government should not be picking and choosing, nor promoting any one charity over another simply because it is impossible to fairly cover and promote all charities. Rather, the U.S. should have only promoted the single relief charity which is chartered by Congress specifically for that effort, and that is the American Red Cross.

About two days after the earthquake which practically destroyed the entire nation, First Lady Michelle Obama issued a Public Service Announcement promoting and encouraging donation to the American Red Cross. While Boycott Watch applauds that, that statement should have been made sooner, and President Obama should have just directed Americans to the Red Cross website from the beginning. Unfortunately, Mrs. Obama's Public Service Announcement was largely ignored because came long after Americans were using their cell phones to give ten dollar donations. Timing is everything.
